READING WITH YOUR CHILD IS IMPORTANT!
Your child develops important early reading skills through play and lots of communication. Encourage your child to explore a variety of books and nursery rhymes, and encourage family and friends to read with your child. Your child continues to learn that stories have a beginning, middle and end, and reading gives them opportunities to listen to and talk about sounds, words and patterns. Reading also helps your child explore new ideas, words and information. Becoming a fluent and expressive reader takes time. Talking together, exploring books and reading with your child every day helps them develop a love of books and reading.
What can I do? There are many early reading skills that your child needs to develop before they become confident readers. These include skills in speaking and listening, learning about sounds and words, and sharing books together. As your child continues learning to read, it is important you help them develop these skills at home through play. Choose games that focus on speaking and listening skills like Simon Says, What am I?, Twenty Questions, watch and explore the world around you, and of course read lots.
There are lots of things to read including nursery rhymes; story books; non-fiction books; books on dinosaurs and pets; books you make together; funny stories and poems; joke books; websites and CD books; comic books; newspapers, catalogues and magazines; recipe books; street maps; and dictionaries.
Home Reading.
Below are some questions you might like to ask your child while they are reading to you.
• Predict from the front cover
• What do you think is happening ?
• I wonder what will happen next ?
• What would you do if…..?
• How would you feel if …….?
• What is the story about ?
• Why do you think this happened?
• What was the author trying to share with you?
• How can you relate to the story or events?
• Discuss the characters and events
What was the problem?
How was the problem solved?
When writing at home please encourage your child to use the following Writing Goals.
Writing is on the lines.
Writing starts at the edge.
Writing has who, what, when, where, why?
Capital letters for sentence beginnings, names and places.
Fullstops, question marks and exclamation marks.
Sight words spelled correctly.
CVC words spelled correctly.
Adjectives (brown, big)
One finger spacing.
Thank you,
Katy Moriarty.

Has your child mentioned WALT, WILF and TIB? These little ones have been in class since the beginning of the year but maybe you haven’t noticed them yet. In our class they have important jobs to do, They help us to be more actively involved in our learning. WALT informs students of the learning intention- what we hope they will learn. WILF provides students with the success criteria. While TIB inspires students with the reason or purpose of the learning. Next time you are in the classroom ask your child to show you Walter and Wilfred.
Within Mathematics this week, students have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes. We have been focusing on the properties of each type of shape like faces, edges and vertices. The students have had fun creating their own 3D cubes using matchsticks and blu-tac. They were then able to use the 3D representation in order to determine the amount of faces, edges and vertices that a cube has.
STEM Learning - STEM is a newly introduced subject to primary schools. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. First rule always check the sign.
Second rule are my numbers in line.
Start in the ones column.
Write the answer down.
Move to the tens column.
Continue......
We have planted our potatoes. We also have a lemon tree.
WASTE WISE. NO WRAP THURSDAY. Room A1 is participating in 'No Wrap Thursday'.
On Thursdays, we ask you to send your child's recess and lunch in a reusable container (including drinks). If you have plastic sandwich boxes, they keep sandwiches/food really fresh and wrapping in plastic wrap or foil is unnecessary. You may find that it is not that hard and you may be able to send no wrap lunches on other days too.
We thank you for your support in making the Winthrop Primary School students conscious of the ways in which they can live an environment friendly lifestyle.
5 Finger Test
Take the 5 finger test to find out if a book is just right for you. Pick a page and start reading out loud. Each time you come to a tricky word you don’t know put one finger up.
1 Finger – Easy.
2 Fingers – Just right.
3 Fingers – a little bit hard but it could be fun to try.
4 Fingers – difficult to read (share with parents or friends).
5 Fingers – Too difficult for now –save it for later.
DEVELOPING READING SKILLS
Before Reading
Using the front cover as motivation, ask your child what they think the story might be about, who they think the main characters might be and why (predicting). Encourage them to explain why they have this opinion or idea – justify responses. They can identify the author and illustrator and maybe discuss other books by this author.
During Reading
These questions can be asked at any time during reading to gauge comprehension. Use ‘who’. ‘why’, ‘what’, ‘when’ and ‘how’ questions. You can ask your child to retell what they have read in their own words. Ask them what certain words mean, have your child predict the ending or the next part of the story. Ask them ‘Why’ something may have happened (cause and effect).
After Reading
These types of questions are designed to be used once the reading has been completed and include:
literal (right there in front of you on the page),
inferential (information implied but not explicitly stated) and
evaluative (requiring own judgement) questions.
Provided are examples of all three types of question.
Literal: Who were the main characters, what did they do, can you tell me the story in order in your own words?
Inferential: The main character made certain decisions, why did they choose the ones they did? The main character wore a jumper and beanie for most of the story, why?
Evaluative: If you were in the same position as the main character what would you do? Why do you think the main character did what they did? Did you like the story, why or why not?
These questions are intended as a guide only and listening to and asking your children about what they are reading will improve their skills and motivate them to become avid readers. Your encouragement is a great motivator for your children.
Our Literacy focus this term includes consolidating our knowledge of letters, blends, words and sounds, through our phonic program, and practising our reading and writing of sight words. Through our guided reading groups and ‘read-to-self’, we are continuing our journey of deepening our comprehension of all kinds of texts and building our reading stamina, while developing our love of reading! We have begun exploring what makes a great narrative, recount, and retell, in writing. We have also made marvellous inroads in our handwriting already, and will continue to refine our printed letters on dotted thirds throughout the remainder of the year. We are also learning how to check our own punctuation and grammar when editing our own writing.
Remember the success criteria for a recount when writing, which includes: Title (short and sharp), Orientation (who, what, when, where, why), Events (Firstly, Next, After that, Finally) and Personal Comment (feelings)
In Maths, we are using pop sticks, construction cubes, wooden blocks and number cards to explore numbers and place value. We are working towards reading, writing and manipulating bigger numbers. We are also using number lines to help us with subtraction and addition.
Paint Storm Incursion (The Hero's Heart) Tuesday 12/6/2018 11:30am - 12:30pm
Lapathon - To be advised, pending weather.
Free Dress - Wednesday 13/6/2018. Gold coin donation.
Constable Care Incursion ( First Aid Heroes) 28/6/2018 9:50am - 10:40am
29/6/2018 Last day of term.
It has been fabulous to see the commitment to developing spelling skills through our homework. Encouraging reading and being read to is a wonderful way to further your child’s love of reading. Remember, reading can take many forms such as reading menus, brochures, ingredient lists, recipes, newspapers and comics just to name a few. Another way to develop learning is to let your child write, whether it is a birthday card, shopping list, texting a relative on your phone, or using the computer all help. Don’t forget speaking and listening, we all know how much our class loves to share their ideas and it would be great if we could all practise listening skills.
The children have been learning a range of comprehension strategies they can apply when reading, writing, viewing, speaking and listening. During our literacy sessions we have been reading big books and focusing on a comprehension strategy, vocabulary, fluency, expression and spelling to help us understand what we are reading. Through scaffolded and partner activities the students have been learning to use reading strategies such as prediction, inferring, skimming, self-questioning and connecting. Students are also working in Guided Reading groups to develop their comprehension and reading fluency. We have been writing narratives, recounts and persuasive texts. Students have been using nouns, verbs, adjectives, suffixes and Wow words to create more exciting and persuasive texts for the reader.

In class we have been focusing on telling the time to the hour (o’clock) and half past. We have also discussed quarter to and quarter past. With practise we will become super time tellers. One way you can assist us at home is to ask your child to read both digital and analogue clocks.
Money - Discuss what makes 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2 (Different combinations) eg. 20c =10c+10c, 10c+5c+5c, 5c+5c+5c+5c.
How many 10c coins make $1:00? How many 20c coins make$1:00?
Spelling Strategies.
Look, Cover, Write, Check.
Look at the spelling word,
Cover it with your hand,
Write it down and
Check for correct spelling.
Break into syllables.
Clap the word to count the syllables.
Write the words placing a line (/) where the syllable should be, for eg; smoky has one syllable, it should be written smo/ky.
Highlight vowels.
Write all spelling words down then circle or highlight any vowels in the words.
a, e, i, o, u.
Rainbow Phonemes.
Phonemes are the sounds in the word. For eg: the word smoky has five sounds, s m o k y, which means each letter should be in a different colour. Count the sounds on your fingers.
Questions to ask your child:
How many days are there in a week? What are the days in order?
How many months are there in a year? What are the months in order?

Message from Miss Nichols:
Needed - Shopping catalogues and magazines for Integrated Studies.
Thank you.
In Mathematics we have been practising vertical addition and subtraction.
The rule for Column Addition or Subtraction Without Regrouping is:
First rule always check the sign.
Second rule are my numbers in line.
Start in the ones column.
Write the answer down.
Move to the tens column.

This semester we are studying Fairytales and Fantasy. We will look at The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Gingerbread Man and The Three Little Pigs. We will use these tales to start writing our own narratives.
STICKS NEEDED - START COLLECTING! We are very excited to be building a stick house in Technology and Enterprise. We are going to pretend to be a wolf and see if our houses are strong enough to keep standing. Stay tuned for the results.
Information and Technology: The children have demonstrated great enthusiasm and developing skill in this area. We have integrated the use of iPads and laptops into our learning experiences. Students also enjoy using the Interactive Whiteboard. We continue to engage with the Year 5 students during our computer time. This has allowed us to use the laptops to develop our keyboard skills. We are looking forward to incorporating the use of new technologies, including,“beebots” and “osmo”.
Our classroom motto this term is 'have a go, never stop trying'.
In Science this term, we are exploring landscapes and the sky as part of the sustainability and ‘Earth and Space Sciences’ unit. We’ve taken several walks through the school to observe natural and constructed landscapes in our school environment. Finding out the difference between natural, constructed and managed features. Helpers have worked with the class to plant the year one garden. The students are observing the changes in the garden over time; focusing on the life cycle of the plants, how they grow, how weather conditions or human activity may alter the garden and how we need to care for it. The students will continue to care for the garden for the rest of the year. The garden monitors will monitor the watering/weeds.
Message from Miss Nichols:
The children produced spectacular landscapes using a variety of materials and outlined the procedure involved. The amazing art work is on display in the classroom.
THANK YOU for the lovely food for our class lunch and the gifts.
CLASS LUNCH.
Our wonderful Pre-service teacher Miss Nichols has completed a very successful practicum. Her interesting lessons, resources and teaching style we have all enjoyed. We wish her all the best with her future teaching career.
It has been a busy and very productive term. We will be celebrating the hard work and exemplary behaviour of the students in Room A1 by having a class lunch on Thursday 21st of September starting at 12:20pm.
It is asked that boys bring a plate of savoury foods and that girls bring a plate of sweet foods. Please remember NO NUTS.
Please note that if you are bringing in hot food, it needs to be at school by 12:20pm with the food already heated up.
Your child will need to bring recess but not lunch as the class lunch (food) will be their lunch on this day.
TERM 2, 2017. PHOTOS IN THE GALLERY SECTION.
Students resume - Wednesday 26/4/2017.
WELCOME BACK. Term 2 has commenced smoothly after the school holidays and it is wonderful to see the students engaged and ready to participate and work hard in all classroom learning.
STEM Learning - STEM is a newly introduced subject to primary schools. STEM stands for Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This subject is inquiry based learning and develops students understanding of the mentioned subjects in an integrated and hands on way. This Friday 28/4/2017 ( 9:00am) we will use the Science Room to make something using recycled materials. We will use our creations to decorate our Assembly backdrop. Any parents or grandparents that can help please come along. What a creative group of children. Our recycled art is amazing. Thank you parents, grandparents and cousins that came to help.
Dino Dig has been added to our Helpful Websites section. The children play the game and develop skills in co-ordinates and map reading which is part of our Geography program.
Our Assembly is next Friday 5/05/2017. The children are so enthusiastic and are doing an amazing job at remembering their lines and actions. I am very proud of them all and impressed with their confidence and initiative to take on responsibilities which earlier in the year seemed so scary. We hope parents, grandparents and relatives can join us for this special occasion. Children need to be at school at 8:30am. We need to be in the Undercover area at 8:45am. Assembly starts at 9:00am. Children need to wear their faction shirts. Any parents that can help us to set up our assembly backdrop in the undercover area on Thursday 4/5/2017 starting at 2:20pm is appreciated. Our Assembly was GREAT. The children were AWESOME. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents that helped with the backdrop.
Our Science topic is Physical Science. We will be looking at Light Energy and Sound Energy. The students will be focusing on light and sound and using their senses to make and record observations about these forms of energy.
Please encourage your child to use the correct letter formations, with emphasis on starting points and strokes when writing at home.
(eg. Spelling words, News, Story writing.) Correcting pencil hold and correct starting position for letters and numbers. Writing on different mediums such as whiteboards, in the sand, with glitter pens will help to develop fluency. Letters and numbers start with pull down/ up the hill/ over/ go around or sideways, remembering the joins and kicks. Lowercase p,r,k, z and b are tricky.
This term we will be working with our BUDDY CLASS , the Year 5 children in Miss Coen's D1 class.
Thank you to our wonderful parent representatives Mrs Goh and Mrs Slack for keeping us well informed with the latest updates and news.
The students have been learning how to orally count from 0 by 2s, 5s and 10s to 100. At home, I encourage you to provide opportunities for your child to orally count forwards and backwards from 0 by 2s, 5s and 10s to 100 and beyond ( Bounce a ball and count, skip and count, flick out fingers and count ). Continue to practice writing the numbers, forming the digits correctly.
The students have been learning to name and order the days of the week, name and order the months of the year and name the seasons.
Telling the Time
In class we have been focusing on telling the time to the hour (o’clock) and half past.

Instructions:
Fill with water and seal your plastic zip lock bag. Over a sink or tray let children gently poke each pencil through the bag until it pierces both sides and surprise, surprise, NO water leaks out!
Questions asked before the experiment:
“What would happen if I tried to push one of these pencils through the bag of water? Would the water leak out and make a giant mess?”
Children’s responses…before the experiment…
Oh no! Don’t do it! Move back! I will get wet. There will be a mess.
Then…during the experiment….
Wow! Cool. This is so, so good. The water stays in the bag. How did you do that?

The children really enjoyed our Lava Lamp experiment.
We talked about the equipment and the experiment. We had a guess as to what might happen. First we had to fill a plastic bottle almost to the top with vegetable oil, then fill the rest with water. The water went to the bottom of the bottle even though we put it on top of the oil. Then we added 4 drops of red food colouring to the bottle.
The food colouring made little balls and sunk through the oil. When the balls hit the bottom they coloured the water but not the oil. Then Mrs Moriarty dropped in some aspirin tablets and the coloured water made coloured bubbles that floated up into the oil. It was fantastic!
Thank you to Jade, Hunter and Jackson for retelling the experience.
“That was AMAZING” said Ben.
“WOW” said Ewan.
Charis said, “Let’s do it again”. SO WE DID.
Now we have two lava lamps in the classroom. Come to our classroom and see our Lava Lamps. We are looking forward to our next experiment.
THANK YOU to Mrs Davidson, Mrs Goh, Mrs Slack, Mrs Geen and Mrs Bloomfield for helping us with our Art session. We will continue to paint our ROOSTERS on Wednesday the 8th of February starting at 1:20pm. If you can help us please let me know. Parents and grandparents are welcome.

Message from Miss Nichols:
Needed - Shopping catalogues and magazines for Integrated Studies.
Thank you.
In Mathematics we have been practising vertical addition and subtraction.
The rule for Column Addition or Subtraction Without Regrouping is:
First rule always check the sign.
Second rule are my numbers in line.
Start in the ones column.
Write the answer down.
Move to the tens column.
Continue......
LEAK PROOF BAG EXPERIMENT.

What you need:
Large Plastic Zip Lock Bag
Sharp Pencils
Water
Instructions:
Fill with water and seal your plastic zip lock bag. Over a sink or tray let children gently poke each pencil through the bag until it pierces both sides and surprise, surprise, NO water leaks out!
Questions asked before the experiment:
“What would happen if I tried to push one of these pencils through the bag of water? Would the water leak out and make a giant mess?”
Children’s responses…before the experiment…
Oh no! Don’t do it! Move back! I will get wet. There will be a mess.
