CLASSROOM INFORMATION
The classroom will be open at 8.35am. Children should not be at school before this time, as there will not be a teacher on duty to supervise them. Students are expected to get themselves ready for the day. (Bring into class their reading bag and water bottle, change their take home reader, get their chair and sharpen their pencils.). Reading bags must be at school every day, as they will be used to carry class information, home reading books and spelling words.
School Starts - 8:50am Recess is at 10:40am to 11:00am Lunch is at 12:40pm to 1:20pm.
Our classroom is a Crunch and Sip classroom. The children are welcome to bring a water bottle into class. After lunch I also encourage children to bring in fresh fruit or vegetables as an afternoon snack.
Fitness will run most days throughout the year, so please ensure students have appropriate footwear and clothing to participate.
READING
Reading procedures provide meaningful contexts for focusing on selected parts of the reading process. The week is divided into several activities as part of the Reading Curriculum. For example whole class comprehension, word study and directed silent reading.
Modelled reading, Reading to students, Explicit Teaching and Language Experience allow the teacher to demonstrate how strategies can be used to help the reader make sense of the text.
Shared and Guided reading provide opportunities to practice these strategies with guidance and support.
Book Discussion Groups and Independent reading sessions allow students time to apply the skills.
The children will also be extending their reading skills into other curriculum areas. Reading will also be part of the homework program and should be conducted five nights a week and recorded in their reading record folder. Children are strongly encouraged to borrow books from the Library before school and during lunchtimes.
WRITING
The children's writing is integrated throughout the curriculum. We will use the process and modelled writing approach and explore various forms of writing such as narrative, procedure, description, letters, poetry, exposition, reports and recounts.
HANDWRITING/PRINTING
We will have three formal lessons per week to focus on correct letter formation and to continue development of handwriting style.
SPELLING
Includes the Sound Waves Program , theme words, personal spelling words and the development of spelling rules. Children can use the look, say, cover, write and check method as one of the strategies to practice words.
MATHEMATICS
Using the iMaths Program we will investigate Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability. Oral mental maths will take place daily to increase children's number skills. The children will be encouraged to apply their maths knowledge to problem solving, using lots of everyday situations. I encourage the children to use concrete materials to explore mathematical concepts.
